How to Make the Classic Shepards Pie Recipe

With the different variations of Shepards pie recipes you can find online and in pastry magazines, it has become the preferred choice of moms for their kids as a lunch dessert. To make your own Shepards pie recipe, you should start by learning the original, classic recipe for Shepards pie.

You'll be surprised to know that it only takes 10 minutes to prepare this recipe and about 65 minutes to cook it. Still in just one hour, you have a delectable dessert you can serve to your loved ones.

The ingredients for the Classic Shepards Pie recipe include:

. 1 pc. brown onion (halved and finely chopped)
. 1 tablespoon olive oil
. 1 pc. carrot (peeled and finely chopped)
. 500 grams lamb mince
. 2 pc. celery sticks (trimmed and finely chopped)
. 2 tablespoons plain flour
. 1 dried bay leaf
. 2 cups or 5 ml. beef stock
. 1 tablespoon tomato paste
. 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
. Salt & freshly ground black pepper
. 40 grams butter
. 4 200-gram (each) desiree potatoes (peeled & chopped)
. 1/2 cup or 125 ml. milk
. Melted butter (for brushing)

Here's the procedure:

Step 1: Heat oil in a large-sized saucepan. Put in medium to high heat. Add the carrot, onion and celery. Cook and stir for 5 minutes until it becomes soft. Add the lamb mince. Cook and stir again to break the lumps. Do this for 5 minutes until the lamb changes color.

Step 2: Add the flour. Cook and stir for 2 minutes or until it's combined. Then add the bay leaf, stock, tomato sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Allow boiling before you reduce the heat to low. Then cook and stir occasionally for 30 minutes or until the sauce starts to thicken. Taste it and season with salt & pepper as desired.

Step 3: Cook the potatoes in a saucepan with salted boiling water for 15 mins. or until it becomes tender. Make sure to drain well. Go back to the pan with butter and use a fork or potato masher until it becomes smooth. Then add the milk. Use a wooden spoon for stirring until it is combined. Taste the mixture an season with salt & pepper as desired.

Step 4: Preheat oven to 200 degrees C. Spoon the lamb mixture into an 8-cup or 2 liter ovenproof baking dish. Top with mashed potato and then use a fork for spreading the lamb mixture. Brush it with butter. Bake the pie in a preheated oven for 20 minutes or until you see the mashed potato turn golden brown. Serve the pie.
