Flying Mini Helicopters

Starting out - Setting Trim
First thing when beginning your mini helicopter flight, you should check all of the trim functions on the model. Helicopter trim functions are usually distinguishable by the small dials located on the remote. These small dials are used to make minor adjustments to the control of the mini helicopter. The goal of trimming a mini helicopter is so that when the model has just minor throttle applied it will stay in a relatively stable position. A properly trimmed mini helicopter model will be much easier to fly then one that is not. In some cases if the trim settings are bad enough, the model will be unable to fly.
Training Wheels
When learning to fly a mini helicopter or a larger scale model, you should use some sort of training bumpers. This will prevent the helicopter from flipping over onto the tail rotor and destroying expensive components. You can make mini ones using a small amount of bent wire to create a ring around the helicopter. Or you can buy one. If you are learning with a coaxial ready-to-fly electric helicopter such as the Lama or Walkera 54, then the training gear is unnecessary. On the other But if you are learning with a bigger and more expensive model such as the T-REX, then make sure you have some or you may watch your investment be destroyed.
Setting a Watch or Timer
When first beginning to fly a mini helicopter and even when you are an experience pilot, you should always use a flight timer. On more expensive radio control helicopter models, the radio equipment will come with a built in timer. In smaller mini helicopters you will have to set your own timer. You can use an egg timer or even some of the many applications that are available for the IPhone or Android. You can then set how long your battery will last on the helicopter so you know exactly what your flight time is. You don't want to be floating in the air and all of a sudden the helicopter come crashing to the ground.
Your First Mini Helicopter Hover
First slowly increase the throttle so that the helicopter will begin to lift off of the ground. This can be a delicate balance since your mini Syma helicopter probably will not move until about half throttle then seem to pop up. But that is why it is imperative to show control with your throttle. Now slowly increase the throttle on the mini helicopter until it lifts further from the ground and hovers. In a mini helicopter like the Syma or the Imex, there is no coaxial control, so the lift of the helicopter is determined by the speed of the rotating blade.
Keep practicing your hovering, each time just raise your height a little more. Though it may seem scary bringing the helicopter up to a higher altitude it is actually much easier to hover the mini helicopter at this point. Just make sure that you are keeping track of your flight times.
Flying
Once you have become comfortable hovering the mini helicopter at different heights you can begin slowly moving the helicopter around. You will notice that you are already flying the helicopter in a much better fashion since you are no comfortable with hovering At this point you can begin sliding the helicopter around and then bringing it back to a neutral hover. Each time begin walking with the mini helicopter further and further. We will continue these lessons soon!
