Today a thought occurred to me about business blogging while I was holding the door for an elderly couple at a local convenience store. The couple was so taken back by my gesture that the lady went on to state: "You know there was a time in this country where this sort of thing was common place. Nowadays, most people are in too much of a hurry to stop and be courteous. Thank you for your kindness young man." With a quick response I shot back: "You're most welcome! It was my pleasure playing doorman for such a handsome young couple as you appear to be!" Well, I thought they were both going to come out of their skin we as we all had a hearty laugh over my quit wit. Right about now, you are probably asking yourself: Where is he going with this? Well, my "180 "Brilliant Ideas For Better Blogging In 2011 And Beyond" is no great secret if you will only get about the business of experiencing life, rather than walking through it; allow me to explain.
The way I see our calendar year is just the same as you. There are 365 days in a year, and here in America, the consecutive holidays we will celebrate through the end of 2011 and beyond are: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. For those of you in another Country, I am quite certain you can come up with your own set of 5 most definite holidays you would not work on. By my count, this leaves 180 days that you will target for your business blogging campaigns. Now that I have gotten that out of the way, let me talk about where these brilliant ideas will come from.
Like my chance encounter with that couple earlier in my day, we all have moments, or opportunities as I would like to refer to them as, to really experience life through the eyes of another individual. When we allow these gifts to enter into our lives, we begin to live life as God had intended for all of us to enjoy. These opportunities can occur at any moment, and can be utilized to develop our business blogging craft into to something that shifts from the mundane to something truly special and spectacular. It's all about waking up and noticing all the things going on around you every minute of every day! So, before you can develop a writing style, you must have a story to tell. They are all around, and I say this with great confidence because I too learned this lesson in the most unlikely place, from what began with a stranger, that at first glance seemed to be a nosey old man, who turned out to be an "Angel in Disguise!
It was August of 1979, while in the United States Navy, and I had just been assigned my first permanent duty station aboard the USS Nitro. The Nitro was in dry dock just outside of the old Brooklyn Navy Yard in Red Hook, and I had a weekend pass to make my way home for my first visit in months to Up-State New York. To accomplish this, I first had to make my way via the "F Train" from the Jay Street and Burrow platform to the "A Train" somewhere in the dark recesses of the New York City Subway Tunnels, to the Port Authority at 42nd Street in Manhattan. After an hour of rude people pushing and shoving each other around to get where they were going, I finally arrived at the Adirondack Trail Ways ticket window. "One ticket to Amsterdam New York please", I exclaimed through the window! "That'll be $35.00 young man", the man said. With ticket in hand, I went to find a seat to await my departure for the last leg of my journey home! Now, if you'll bear with me just a bit more, I will reveal how this ties into business blogging as quick as I can.
Almost as soon as I sat down, this old man sitting next to me, kept trying to get me to talk. All I wanted to do was to be left in peace, so that I could unwind after that trying adventure in the Subway, and was in no mood to talk. After the 2nd or 3rd time trying to pull me from my funk, the "Old Guy" said something I will never in my life forget as long as I live. "You know what son?" "Okay, I give, what do you have to say that is so all fired important? Just want to say that it is better to have known a man for 5 minutes, than to have never known him at all!" Huh I thought to myself.I should be dipped in hot tar and feathered for my rudeness. As embarrassed as I felt, I managed to squeak out; "Thank you for that piece advice Sir. That is the most profound thing anyone has ever said to me, and I will never forget your words!" Well, we sat for what seemed like an eternity having the best conversation I had ever experienced in my young life, and maybe for all time. Just as suddenly as we had met, we parted, never to see each other again. That was the "wake up" call that I use to this day to experience life, and is my secret weapon behind my business blogging!
As always, let me thank you for stopping by for a visit. It has been a pleasure bringing you my latest creation, 180 Brilliant Ideas For Better Business Blogging In 2011 And Beyond, and hope you have found it to be entertaining as well valuable.
