Whetstones are one of the oldest tools invented and are very recurrently found in many anthropological sites. In earlier times it was used to sharpen weapons like swords and spears. Japan was and still is famous for whetstones, as it has great history of fighting and weapon development. Whetstone is a flat stone on which the metal is honed up for better working. Although now-a-days whetstones are made of synthetic material as natural element are scarcely available. But the natural element of which whetstones were made of is mostly found in Japan.

Today whetstones are used to sharpen culinary tools like knives and cutters. There are many types of whetstones beside natural and synthetic. Some are flat, other three dimensional and of other several shapes. With the time whetstones have also been modernized and are available as water and oil whetstones. Water whetstones are moistened by keeping them in water for 10-15 minutes and oil whetstones are polished by adding a few drops of oil on its service t make it greasy. These techniques help in removing the sharpened off scrap from the tool making it cleaner and sharper.

2. The angle of the knife is the most important thing if you want your knife to be perfectly and easily sharpened. The recommended angle is 20 degree.
3. Place the foot or the side of the blade used for cutting on the whetstone.
4. Carefully placing the tip of the knife on the whetstone. Bring the blade in your direction rubbing across the whetstone on its way towards you.
5. Repeat this action at least ten times for good result.
6. Check the edge for burr on the other side of the stone which is smoother.
7. The knife is sharpened from one side, change the side of the knife to sharpen it from the other side too and do the whole exercise again on this side.
8. To give smooth edges to your knife use the honing device.
