Each one of us at some point faces questions concerning our future profession and the institution we wish attend to continue education. This is a very important decision in our lives, and sometimes it is a very hard choice to make. My choice of institution and occupation is influenced by the very valuable experience I have had in my life: coming to the United States of America, the land of opportunities, dreams, and freedom. This experience has had a great impact on my personal values, brought a unique insight of the future choice of career, and helped to find the school of my dreams - the Schreyer Honors College.
Moving from Russia to America was a big challenge for me. It was very hard to leave everything dearest to my heart: my home country, family, and friends. Before I arrived in the United States, I thought everything would be pleasant and uncomplicated, but it did not turn out that way. Life was very difficult in the beginning. I did not know any English and had no job or friends. I simply felt like an alien in a different world, not knowing what was ahead. At first, this experience seemed to be negative; however, it brought an unexpected change and new horizons into my life.
Time passed, and I understood a few important things. First of all, I realized that I had a great opportunity to go to school, for which I'm very thankful today. In Russia, I did not have a great chance of pursuing a higher education due to financial difficulties. I started to attend a local community college and found my passion for mathematics. Also, I was very thankful for the job opportunity in tutoring mathematics at this college from which I gained many valuable personal and professional skills. At first, it was not a very easy job to do; every student I worked with had a different opinion on the subject matter, so it was essential to understand, respect, and listen to other people's ways of thinking. On the other hand, tutoring was a great experience from which I learned a lot about myself. Tutoring helped me to improve my communication skills, gain new knowledge from students, develop skills of patience, and understand various viewpoints. Coming from a different country, I knew how to be sensitive to diversity and respectful of all cultures. Furthermore, tutoring helped me make a difference in my life and the lives of my students, especially those who had been struggling with their studies. Knowledge that I gained from tutoring mathematics changed me as a person, enabled me to pursue my interests in science, technology, and engineering, and prepared me for the institution I would like to attend in the future.
As a result of this experience and my passion for learning, I have decided to apply to the Schreyer Honor College to obtain a degree in Nuclear Engineering. This degree would enable me to work in today's very essential fields that derive benefits and prevent harmful effects of nuclear energy and radiation, such as to develop technology used to diagnose and treat diseases, reduce pollution, and save our environment. For me, this is the most exciting occupation, where I can show the strong sides of my personality and my passion for science. I am a very hard- working, creative, open-minded person, seeking knowledge and having a strong desire to comprehend the world we live in and make it a better place. In addition, coming from a different country has had a huge influence on my point of view. I believe that cooperation among nations is crucial in maintaining the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. My goals are to improve safety conditions at nuclear facilities and make a contribution to nuclear science in general, especially today with the growth of terrorism, organized crime, natural disasters, and a weakened world economy.
Moreover, I believe that the SHC offers a quality education, and I will work hard to bring honor to this university. I would strive to contribute in innovation, discovery, engineering of new technology, and establishment of leading industries. These qualities have lead to the prosperity of the United States and a brighter road for the better future of humankind. Also, being an immigrant myself, I really appreciate that the SHC enrolls students from all over the world, regardless of their cultural diversity and individual characteristics, which demonstrates high diplomacy on the international scale and respect to other countries.
Living in the United States has shown me how to look at the world in a different perspective, and has made me a stronger, more confident and responsible young person. Also, I learned that we must always have our dreams and goals to achieve, either personal or professional, show our will, and never give up. Furthermore, the valuable skills and knowledge I gained have helped me to make a final decision concerning my future profession and the school I am seeking to attend. Our country needs specialists who are knowledgeable in their fields of work and who have creative and organizational skills. The Schreyer Honors College prepares such specialists. Lastly, I believe I will also be an asset to the SHC. I offer a perspective that is unique, experiences that are global, and personal qualities that are congenial. In the SHC, I look forward to the opportunities to reach my goals and become a more educated person who can bring a positive influence into someone's life and make a difference in society.
