We create reality constantly. There is no out-there as we understand it. The outside is a direct consequence of the inside. The outside and inside that I’m speaking of are the outside and inside of ourselves. But what are we? What are we really? Are we flesh and blood? No, that’s still part of what we call the outside or experiential world. This is illusion. What we are is consciousness. We are the act of experiencing. We are the experience. Whatever we focus our consciousness, that is to say, our attention on, is what eventually becomes real. As a group, humanity stumbles around, bumping into each other, haphazardly creating reality in a very inefficient and unfocused way. The purpose of magick is to deliberately create reality in a focused and efficient way. The practitioner of magick knows that the challenge isn’t in being able to control reality, but in being able to control his or her self. The practitioner of magick knows that the outer reality is only a reflection of the depths of his or her own consciousness. The longer and more strongly you can maintain a mental image with all the associated emotional content appropriate to the image, the more completely real it will become. This is the reason for all the symbolism and ritual involved in magick. These are what allow the practitioner to focus to the point of manifestation. Although it is true that humans constantly generate the dynamics of reality by simply being aware of it, it is also true that the practitioner is but one person and the rest of humanity is creating interference by blindly reacting to the world. This is why there is so much chaos in the world. This is consensus reality. It is the reality that everybody agrees on. Gravity for example is a consensus reality. Everyone agrees that there is a force called gravity that pulls everything down. The goal of the practitioner is to focus strongly enough to overcome consensus reality. If a person were to overcome the bonds of consensus reality, that person could do things like overcoming gravity. The purpose of magick then, the art of the practitioner of whom I speak, is to use ritual and symbolism in conjunction with emotion, to create a reality which is independent of consensus reality. The only thing that really exists is consciousness. This is no different than saying that the only thing that exists is energy. Consciousness is energy and energy is consciousness. They are one and the same. It is this that the practitioner of magick must understand because it is this that makes magick possible. To understand this is to understand that all is one. This is why the practitioner of magick works so hard to attain mastery of self. If you are one with all that is, then mastery of self is mastery of the world. If your reflection offends you, you don’t go about the task of directly engaging the reflection itself. Such an act would be futile. If you want to change your reflection, you need to change that which is generating the reflection…you. The world that you see around you is nothing more than a reflection of your true, inner self. This being said, the path of the would-be practitioner is clear. It is the path of self awareness and self control.
