Damon insists on Katherine to reveal her plans to him. She tells him that she has the necklace, and she has Jeremy. Pearl once told Katherine she knew how to kill Klaus, but she didn't share the information with her, only with Anna. Bonnie accidentally lets is slip to Katherine that Vicki and Anna have been communicating with Jeremy from beyond the grave. Meanwhile, Stefan goes to a bar with Klaus in search of a witch named Gloria to find out why he can no longer create hybrids. She says that she needs contact with a witch named Rebecca, who Klaus needs to bring to her. We then see Stefan looking at a photograph of himself and Klaus from the '20s. Finds out where Stefan is and Alaric tried to convince her to not go looking for him because it's dangerous. Elena insisted on going - her reasoning being that he would not give up on saving her. So Elena goes hiking through the mountains with Alaric and Damon in search of Stefan.

Klaus has possessed Alaric's body and plans on crashing a '60s themed dance at the school. 'Alaric' goes to Katherine to get the lowdown on the gang. After getting the information, he compels Katherine to stab her leg continually. He says that he's been searching for her for 500 years and her death isn't going to be a quick one. He plans to drag out her death for another 250 years. Isobel retreats to an abandoned house where Katherine meets her. It turns out that Isobel is actually in works with one of Klaus' witches to help save Katherine's life. The deal is that Klaus will grant Katherine her freedom if they bring him the moonstone and Elena. They already have the moonstone (Katherine found it hidden in Damon's soap dish) and now all they need to do is get Katherine.

Tyler is brought up to date about the curse and Jules tells him that if they break it first, they can't turn into werewolves at will, meaning they don't have to be werewolves if they don't want to. They figure that Katherine would know about the curse so they show Tyler a picture of her. He identifies her as Elena. They figure out that Elena is Katherine's doppelganger and go to find her. The werewolves try to kill Damon and Alaric when they would not hand over the moonstone. Elijah comes and saves them. Tyler and Brady try to kill Stefan before they realize they have to kill Elena to break the curse. Bonnie tells Jeremy she's known him forever and all of a sudden he's turned into a sweet, hot guy. They share a kiss. The episode ends with Tyler telling Matt about how great Caroline is and how he loves her, but she loves Matt and that she and matt should be together. Tyler goes to Caroline's to say goodbye, but can't get himself to do it. He gets into a car with Jules. Damon takes her out of pain so subtly and she is not scared anymore. She is now fully dead. Elena comes back to meet Damon to make sure he his alright. Damon tries to pretend that he is fine but he is guilty that he was the reason behind Rose's death. He tells her that she always gives up. But Elena says that's she won't.

Katherine attacks, and Jeremy throws the stone out of the barrier. Luckily he is wearing the special ring so Katherine can drain him all she wants, but he will not die. Bonnie, Damon, and Stefan arrive, and Katherine threatens them to free her, or she won't release Jeremy. Rose, Katherine, and Trevor have been running from Klaus ever since. Klaus has already killed Katerina's entire family. Katherine offers Elena eternal life eternal life and slits her wrist. Elena does not accept. Stefan runs to the tomb and finds Elena and takes her home. She realizes that, being the doppelganger, she is the one that is putting everyone else in jeopardy. It turns out that Elena is captured because they need the blood of "the doppelganger" (Elena) to break the curse, which the moonstone holds together. Elijah shows up to perform the human sacrifice. He forces her to reveal where the moonstone is. Damon and Stefan burst into the house and Damon stakes Elijah.

Stefan and Elena continue making everyone making everyone think that they are in a fight. Caroline believes this, but Damon does not. Damon drinks some lemonade and topples over. It turns out that Mason had spiked it with vervain. Liz watches everything go down and calls for backup. As she leaves, Caroline confronts her. Caroline sees how distressed Liz is and becomes curious. Caroline decides to eavesdrop on her mother's surroundings. Stefan has a dream about Katherine and wakes up to find her lying next to him. They delve into their past, and Stefan offers Katherine some of "Damon's private stock". He then stabs her, and chains her up in the vampire cell and tortures her with verveine to find the real reason why she came back to Mystic Falls. She continues to insist it was for him, and continues her story of what happened at the Founder's Ball in his dream. Damon, Stefan and Elena ask for Alaric's help in learning more about the Lockwoods. They discuss Alaric's wife, Isobel's research, and Alaric admits that in addition to vampires, her research into Mystic Falls, rooted in folklore and legend, also included information on a lycanthrope. After convincing Alaric that they have reason to suspect that Mason was a werewolf, they request access to Isobel's research. Alaric agrees, and Damon, Elena and Alaric head over to Duke University to access her research.
