Damon insists on Katherine to reveal her plans to him. She tells him that she has the necklace, and she has Jeremy. Pearl once told Katherine she knew how to kill Klaus, but she didn't share the information with her, only with Anna. Bonnie accidentally lets is slip to Katherine that Vicki and Anna have been communicating with Jeremy from beyond the grave. Meanwhile, Stefan goes to a bar with Klaus in search of a witch named Gloria to find out why he can no longer create hybrids. She says that she needs contact with a witch named Rebecca, who Klaus needs to bring to her. We then see Stefan looking at a photograph of himself and Klaus from the '20s. Finds out where Stefan is and Alaric tried to convince her to not go looking for him because it's dangerous. Elena insisted on going - her reasoning being that he would not give up on saving her. So Elena goes hiking through the mountains with Alaric and Damon in search of Stefan.

Greta feeds Jenna some of her blood to complete Jenna's transformation into a vampire. We find out that Jenna is supposed to be sacrificed. Stefan steps up and decides to offer himself as the sacrifice instead of Jenna. Stefan goes to Klaus with his proposition - Klaus isn't interested and stabs Stefan and tosses him aside. Then, Klaus kills Jenna. Caroline and Matt meet up for the first time since he found out she turned. He convinces her to tell him everything. He is very distraught and asks him to make him forget. She wipes his memory, but it turns out that he drank vervain so he is immune to her powers. He goes to the Sheriff and tells him everything Caroline said.

Damon and Katherine hang out at the Salvatore mansion. It turns out that Katherine has made a deal with John - she will help with Klaus in exchange for saving one of the Salvatore brothers (of her choice.) Damon saves Katherine from an invisible stake. Apparently, witches can teleport into the Salvatore's without being seen to get the dagger out of Elijah. In this process, Damon kills Luka, and Jonas is furious. Jules shows up at Tyler's and says they need to help each other. Jules later tells Brady that she is sure that a vampire is responsible for Mason's death. Uncle John spots Jeremy in the woods. Bonnie returns as well. She confronts Dr. Martin about his work with Elijah. Jeremy comes up and interrupts the conversation. At school, Tyler and Caroline meet up and she congratulates him on successfully getting through the whole night without killing anyone. She encourages him that it will get better. Caroline also reveals to Tyler that a wolf's bite is fatal to the vampire.

Damon finds out that Mason is missing. He meets with Alaric and the Sheriff at a bar and Jules walks in and asks Alaric about Tyler. Damon and Alaric spike Jules' drink to find out if she's a werewolf. She doesn't fall for their trap and knows that Damon is a vampire. Damon returns home and is met by Rose. She apologizes to him, then is attacked by a werewolf Jules. Stefan informs Jeremy that Elena and him are not back together. Jeremy wonders what happened to Elena. They go to Bonnie for help. Bonnie, using Jeremy's blood, casts a location spell. Stefan runs off to save Elena and Jeremy demands to go with him. Damon enters and says that Stefan will not be going alone. He also informs Stefan that Katherine warned Elena would be in danger but he did not believe because Katherine lies. Bonnie asks Lucy what is their connection. Lucy tells her that they are distant cousins, and advises her to stay connected to her inner witch and to user her power for good. Stefan tells Elena that Katherine is gone forever. Elena tells Stefan he cannot be with him at this moment.

Stefan and Elena head over to the well and Stefan jumps in, only to find out the well is full of vervain water! Luckily, Caroline arrives and belays Elena down the well to get Stefan. Just as they get him out, Elena finds the moonstone, and then snakes start to attack her. Caroline pulls her out the well safely, with the moonstone in hand. Caroline visits her mother again who offers to keep everything a secret instead of getting her memory erased. On returning home, Tyler confronts Mason and tells him that he might know where the moonstone is. He won't tell him unless Mason tells him how to trigger the curse. Mason insists that if he tells Tyler, won't be able to think of anything else. They scuffle, and Mason admits that the trigger is killing someone, taking a human life. Elena, Damon, and Alaric travel to Duke University to study Isobel's research on folklore and paranormal phenomena, hoping to find some clues to the mystery surrounding the Lockwoods. Vanessa, a former student of Isobel's, helps them sort through the research and ends up learning more than she had anticipated. Stefan encounters a terrifying new danger in the woods, and Tyler uncovers a shocking discovery about his uncle Mason.
