"First of all, he is a terrific fighter," Arum says. "At one point, he appeared to be a good guy. But then, his people [handlers after he left Arum] got this idea to make him into a villain. They thought they could attract an audience that comes to see him get beat. Let me tell you. It's tough to promote a villain."

Turning to his right will cut Manny's usual output in half and if he isn't landing huge left hands with consistency, the crowd will be quiet. Those slow, slient rounds undoubtedly favor the thinking man, Marquez. He'll need to keep things calm for 7 or 8 of 12 to have a chance at securing that elusive victory and a guaranteed 10 million dollar payday for a fourth encounter. Can he keep his trunks off the canvas this time? Manny almost knocked him out twice already. There's no getting around that fact. Right now, I feel that if Marquez keeps his feet on the floor for 12, he wins, but Pacquiao can drop or stop him at any point. It's a near even fight to me, with a slight advantage to Manny because he's younger and can change everything with one punch. I'm really looking forward to watching these two greats clash at least one more time.

And when the weight for the fight dipped down to 144 pounds, Golden Boy considered involving Victor Ortiz. Ultimately, nothing was enough, and Golden Boy couldn't reasonably match the latest reported offer, which is $5 million for Marquez at a 144-pound catchweight, with a $10 million payday for a fourth fight between the two if Marquez upsets Pacquiao in November. The fight has seemed like a done deal for about a week now, and the initial offer by Top Rank was sent to Golden Boy's lawyers even before Pacquiao faced Shane Mosley on May 7, though Bob Arum and the company refused to publicly discuss the offer. Now it's official, and Arum says that Golden Boy has signed off on everything, according to Steve Kim.

Marquez will need to return to his strategy of going to a counter-punch, knowing that Pacquiao will not deviate from his aggressive style. Aware the Pacquiao can be caught off balance, Marquez has to be more patient to land body punches, which he failed to properly utilize in the other two bouts, despite his corner's insistence. If Marquez can't throw off Pacquiao's rhythm, or if he tries to out-box Pacquiao, he will be in for a long night.
What Marquez should certainly try to do is avoid taking risks. If he can hold off a Pacquiao combination, and not hit the mat early, Marquez has a legitimate chance of winning the fight in a decision. Pacquiao has a solid chin, so Marquez can win rounds by a combined strategy of going to uppercuts to the body, and straight punches. Marquez is a smart fighter, and if he boxes a very technical fight, and survive the opening rounds, Marquez has a reasonable chance of pulling off the victory.

The fight is beginning to pick back up in this round. At the 2:36 mark, JMM lands a solid straight left hand. Pacman surprised again jumps back does his patented glove tap and starts to play defense. Pacman is cut and looks visibly worried but his heart doesn't allow him to quit. He backs up to the ropes, invites Marquez in and blocks all of the punches with his triangle defense as he maneuvers off the ropes and smiles at Marquez. Pacman seems very bothered by the cut and seems content to play defense. At 1:06, Pacman lungs in with a jab, jab, left combination which he misses. He lands with his back to the ropes and blocks Marquez's own 3 punch combination. JMM lands a stinging 1, 2 combination that snaps Manny's head back. Punches landed in round 8, JMM = 21/46, MP = 5/25. (Rnd. 8 JMM, 10-9)

"UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz" is an upcoming Ultimate Fighting Championship event, scheduled for Oct. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. But looking through Saturday's UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz card, I feel like playing devil's advocate on a few things. Originally, Diaz was scheduled to fight welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre in the main event, but he was dropped down to the co-main event after missing multiple media appearances.

UFC 133: A knee injury incurred by Phil "Mr. Wonderful" Davis prompted UFC to replace him with Tito Ortiz against Rashad Evans less than a month before an Aug. 6 fight in Philadelphia. Evans defeated Ortiz via second-round technical knockout.

St. Pierre sprained a knee ligament during a session that combined boxing with wrestling takedowns. The main card is rounded out with some of the little guys trying to make a name for themselves, as Scott Jorgensen squares off with Jeff Curran in a bantamweight showdown, while Hatsu Hioki and George Roop round out the main card in a featherweight scrap.

Arum is nothing if not clever, even devious. He says he has not promised Bradley a Pacquiao fight, nor even mentioned his name to Pacquiao. That's probably true. But he quickly made Bradley the semi-main event for Pacquiao's Nov. 12 fight at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas against Juan Manuel Marquez, who has proved, indeed, in his two previous fights with Pacquiao that he can last awhile and bleed a lot. On the undercard, Bradley will fight Joel Casamayor, the Cuban who defected to the United States just before the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and has had a nice capitalistic career ever since. His record is 38-5-1, and he has fought only three times since his biggest payday, a knockout at the hands of Marquez on Sept. 13, 2008.
